We are forced to live among a cursed people who will not see, who will not understand, who, if they do see and do understand still do nothing about it.
Several days have passed since the new year dawned. The Gadfly decided to start off the new year with an old story. It begins with Dr Channa Jayasumana. Something he stated to a Sunday newspaper on the 20th of January 2019.
According to him, consuming foods containing artificial flavors and coloring would inevitably lead to kidney diseases. He added that the highly popular soup cube was a definite no-no. Sorry, No-No. No, NO-NO. NO WAY!
Dr Jayasumana is now a minister. So can he not push for laws about these cancer-causing flavoring and coloring? Can’t we stop the import of Ajinomoto? Can’t he push for the compilation of a list of non-essential foods that are currently being imported? Isn’t there anyone who could open his or her mouth and clearly state that such and such foods should not be given to children? Wouldn’t that be better than waxing eloquent about the next generation that will one day take ownership of the nation?
We have parliamentarians yearning to be ministers, ministers yearning for portfolio-change, but there’s no one among these 225 (sorry, 224 since the UNP is yet to name someone to the national list slot) who would spearhead a movement to stop our children from being poisoned?
Then there’s powdered milk.
There’s a report that was tabled in parliament. Samples of powdered milk were sent to European labs for testing to see if there was any animal fat in them. It was discovered that palm oil was an ingredient added to enhance profits. Palm oil as a substitute for cream.
Based on the test results a team of doctors, professors, nutritionists, Health Ministry officials, Consumer Affairs Authority officers and officers of the Standards Institution is said to have submitted a 200-page report to Parliament. It has been distributed to each and every parliamentarian.
Isn’t it tragic that a government which appoints committee after committee to determine how to dispose bodies of those who succumbed to Covid-19 has forgotten all about the children of the nation who are still alive?
The Gadfly came across a statement made by someone who worked in a poultry farm. This is what he had to say:
‘There are 55 acres here. So here’s how it happens. Let’s start with the chick. After seeing it for the first time on the first day, we return to it only on the seventh day. That little chick is so fat by this time that it can hardly walk. It’s kept for two days without water. Sin!
‘Then it’s given water to which something is added. The chick drinks it. In 45 days it’s a fully grown chicken, approximately 3 kg in weight!
‘It’s poison. Don’t ever give it to your children!’
That was his statement. His confession. This alone would amply demonstrate the direction in which the country is heading. This is one reason why girls are now reaching puberty at an age lower than was the case earlier.
That’s not all. The polos neatly cut and sold is washed in liquids used to clean toilets. Turmeric has textile dyes. And we bury our dead. We cremate our dead.
We burn turmeric confiscated from smugglers.
The chillies brought from the Pettah are not washed. They are thrust into the machine along with wheat flour to the ratio of 10 kg per sack. That’s what we eat. And apparently we have a Consumer Affairs Authority in this country! Apparently there’s a Standards Institution!
The Secretary of the Association of Oncologists claims that 76 new cancer patients are admitted every day on average. There’s more. Unilever adds SDBS to soaps such as Lux and Lifebuoy, something that’s not done in any other country.
