Covid19 and the Opposition

Summary

It is as though the SJB spokespersons have been living in a bubble all this time. It’s as though they’ve walked through their hours and days like zombies, without noticing the myriad warnings.

The Opposition opposes. Regardless. That’s a Sri Lankan parliamentary tradition almost. The problem with that kind of mindless politicking is that it can trip the Opposition.

The worthies in the UNP’s new avatar, the Samagi Jana Balavegaya (SJB) are almost salivating over the latest spike in Covid19 infections.

They preamble their not-too-well-disguised joy with a reference to the General Election which they did their best to get postponed. They said at the time that the pandemic necessitates a postponement. Now they say ‘this is why we wanted it postponed!’

Well, the General Election was held on August 5, 2020. The latest ‘wave’ had its first detection almost two months later. Two situations which even those given to stretching a point way beyond logic would find hard to connect. Not an issue for the issue-less SJB obviously.

Was the Government complacent? There are no foolproof systems, not against terrorists and not against viruses. The SJB probably hasn’t listened to or read numerous warnings from relevant authorities regarding Covid19. At every turn, public and private institutions, medical professionals and others involved in combating the pandemic have urged the public to adhere to protection protocols: wash hands, wear a mask, maintain social distance.

But it is as though the SJB spokespersons have been living in a bubble all this time. It’s as though they’ve walked through their hours and days like zombies, without noticing the myriad warnings. It’s as though they’ve not turned on radios and television sets. It’s as though they haven’t read newspapers. It’s as though they’ve not heard of social media.

It’s as though they are clueless. Well, it’s not an ‘it’s as though’ thing, though. Clueless they certainly are.
