With white governments and their media unanimous against Sri Lanka, it is enlightening to see how they operate so-called social media.
Ask any advertising agency why a clearly poisonous product is being marketed, such as most TV-promoted foods, skin-whiteners or even Astra Margarine, and they will tell you, “This is what people want.” You reply, “People want a lot of things; they want Socialism too!” The advertisers respond, “Well, this is what we are paid to give people of what they want.”
Nothing is as bizarre as the corporate marketing of ‘counter culture,’ as evidenced in such frequent media evocations 60 years after, of ‘The Sixties,’ ‘Woodstock’ and ‘Hippies,’ etc., as proof of the ‘freedoms’ of the world’s largest capitalist state. They have even billed some US-funded Colombo Music Festivals as the “Woodstock of Sri Lanka!” Today we plumb the depths of hyper fabrication: the manufacture of fake icons and of fake events by the multinational corporatist media and their public relations machinery. Beyond amnesia, more than hallucination, more like brainwashing, where every day is April Fool’s Day but without the sting of final awareness. The Woodstock of Your Mind – The 1960s saw the greatest solidarity movement ever organized, mainly by Communist Parties, as hundreds of millions of people came together throughout the world to oppose the escalating Euro-Amerikan genocide on Southeast Asia.
The Left Parties and the Unions in Lanka organized major rallies against those wars. In the US, the famed boxer Cassius Clay changed his slave name to Muhammad Ali, and threw his Olympic Gold Medal into the Ohio River, refusing to go to war against Asians, saying, “No Vietcong ever called me Nigger!”
Malcolm X and Martin Luther King paid with their lives for linking capitalism and white supremacism in the US, and imperialist wars abroad. The US government then began to provoke ‘riots’ in its inner cities to preempt growing internal opposition, while assassinating and imprisoning the leaderships of the nascent Black Panther Party and the American Indian Movement (AIM): That was the stick.
Then came the carrot: In 1967, the US government diverted growing discontent amongst its own white settler population, by promoting mass, open-air rock concerts. To prevent the influence of massive strikes by students and workers in the US and Europe, mind-effing “rock festivals” were promoted to millions of youth. The ‘Rock counterculture’ was weaponized to counter, not capitalism, but disciplined political movements: against the most advanced avatar of human liberation – Marxism-Leninism.
Pervasive drug use of PCP, STP, and LSD (synthesized by the Swiss Sandoz Corporation, now owned by Nestlé’s) was promoted at these festivals as harbingers of a “New Age”. The English government’s Rolling Stones were singing “Mother’s Little Helper,” satirizing the corporate barbiturates that kept suburban women catatonic.
LSD was also first pushed in Haight-Ashbury in San Francisco by a joint CIA-MI5 project code-named MK-Ultra, freely distributing 5,000 tablets of psychosis-inducing LSD through Ken Kesey’s commune: Merry Pranksters. Yes, the same Ken Kesey of “One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest.”
Roll Over Beethoven! – The Beatles were sold using a new corporate cultural strategy: Their first major television appearance was at the London Palladium in 1963, where media claimed “thousands of their fans rioted.” Every mass-circulation English newspaper then carried a front-page story proclaiming, “Police fought to hold back 1,000 squealing teenagers.” Yet the photo was cropped so closely, only 4 “squealing teenagers” were actually shown. The incident was a fraud. One photographer on site insisted, “There were no riots… We saw eight girls…” This media style had long been adopted from justifying such US coups as against Prime Minister Mossadegh in Iran in 1953, where widely distributed fake photos claimed ‘popular’ support for the installed puppet Shah.
In 1964, the Beatles and the “British Invasion” swamped the US media after the assassination of US President John Kennedy, and the March on Washington led by Martin Luther King. The Beatles were supposedly mobbed again at Kennedy airport by hundreds of screaming teenage girls. The ‘national’ media announced ‘Beatlemania’ had gone USA. But these were “orchestrated riots”: The girls were borrowed from a Bronx girl’s school. They were paid by the Beatles’ promoters, EMI Records – the “music division” of Electrical and Mechanical Instruments (now Thorn EMI) – among England’s largest producers of electronic weapons! For the next two Sundays, over 75 million Yanks watched the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan Show, as they shook their heads and swayed as Black musicians had always done – a body ritual soon mimicked by hundreds of future “rock groups.”
The Beatles were then rewarded by a decadent English aristocracy: In 1965, the ‘fab four’ were personally made “Members of the British Empire” by their Queen Elizabeth at Buckingham Palace. The drug-addled foursome stopped playing together after 1966, and the rest became studio artifice.
Their promoter, EMI, was an old hand in this “music business”: In 1945, England’s EMI had “taken over” classical music recordings, contracting starving German classical musicians. EMI only promoted “ex-Nazis” such as Herbert Von Karajan to superstar status, while sidelining musicians with more progressive performance traditions.
“The first rock festival” would be “The First Annual Monterey International Pop Festival,” with “staging” and massive outdoor amplification, attended by over 100,000 youngsters in 1967, with massive free giveaways of LSD. And next came Woodstock in 1969…
